Teen Room Redo Part 4: FPS & A Mod Podge Lampshade

There were 2 small projects I worked on in my Teen Room Redo that don't really warrant a post unto themselves so I've combined them, a mod podged lamp and a freezer paper stenciled pillow!

The Freezer Paper Stenciled Eiffel Tower Throw Pillow:

You can find a MULTITUDE of tutorials on Freezer Paper Stenciling and I'm sure mine is not the most thorough but here it is anyway ;)

Supplies:
  • "FREEZER PAPER" - found in most grocery stores with the aluminum foil, found mine at Walmart
  • Fabric
  • Fabric Paint
  • Graphic Art or Lettering
  • Cutting system - I cut this one by hand with my exacto knife but you can also use a Cricut, Silhouette
1) First I found a picture of the Eiffel Tower in google images that was a silhouette, less to cut out that way ;).

2) Next I determined, based upon the size I wanted the pillow, how big the graphic should be, and printed it out. I also printed out the words Paris, France too but ended up not having enough space.

3) Then I put the freezer paper over the graphic and traced the graphic onto the freezer paper with a pencil (I use sharpie now, thicker lines)

4) Next I used my exacto knife and cut out the Eiffel tower. When cutting this way, BE VERY CAREFUL not to rip or over cut your lines as your paint will seep into the cuts.

5) Then you place your freezer paper stencil onto the fabric where you want it and iron it into place.

*A NOTE FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE* If you do NOT want a burn mark in the shape of the Eiffel Tower in the middle of your dinning room table, make sure to place a towel underneath your fabric BEFORE you iron it :-/

6) Put a piece of cardboard underneath your fabric and paint your stencil with FABRIC paint. Use plenty of paint as it can LOOK thick but then have areas that show through once it dries.

7) Let dry as per the instructions on the paint bottle.

8) Peel off the paper and VOILA!

Now, I was doing this pillow about 45 minutes before my daughter was set to come home and we were to do the BIG REVEAL so I ran out of time to actually, you know, make it a PILLOW. So I just set it out on top of the pillow I was going to use ;) But here are the finishing steps ...

9) I was going to cut a black piece of fabric the same size as the white and put it together, right sides together, then sew 3 sides, making sure to backstitch the ends.

10) Then I was going to flip it right side out, stuff it with the insides of this pillow, and sew up the 4th side. EASY PEASY :D

OK! So next is just a SUPER cute Lamp Makeover I did with the help of mod podge that I don't have any pictures for :-/

Found this super cute lamp at Target on Clearance and once I saw the price ...

I knew I HAD to do something with it! It was the wrong color completely but I had a full bottle of Mod Podge at home just ITCHING to be played with ;)

So basically I took two scraps of fabric from other projects in the room, measured and cut them to fit the lamp, then got out the Modge :)

I put a layer of it on the lamp itself, then laid down the fabric, smoothed it out, and after it dried I put a layer of it on the outside.

It dried a little tacky feeling, but OH MY is it cute or WHAT?! Then I hot glued the top of the fabric on the inside of the lamp and WAS DONE, my friends :)

My next Redo post will be about Painting Furniture and the AWESOMENESS that can be born so stay tuned for that!!

Teen Room Redo Part 3: Easy Inexpensive Curtains

Is it just me or are curtains EXPENSIVE?! We have TONS of windows in this house and while that's just great and all, it gets kinda pricey tryin to cover them all! When I was redoing Teen's room I needed to keep costs down so when I saw this idea on the internet I knew it was perfect!

Using a flat sheet!

So I found a hot pink sheet set on clearance for $9.98! I used the fitted sheet on the futon to make it pretty and color coordinated ;) And I used the flat sheet for the curtains!

1) I took a full size sheet and cut it down the center the long way.

2) Then I took one half and sewed the newly cut side up. Then the other. Now you have 2 long sections of fabric ready to hang!

3) I had some extra fabric that coordinated with the room so I decided to add that to the bottom of each piece, so I just sewed them on to the ends.

4) Hang and DONE!

Don't they look pretty?! With the added fabric they cost me about $7 total for BOTH panels :)

I love the color they added to the room and I especially love the price!

Teen Room Redo Part 2: Easy Throw Pillow Makeover

Part 2 in my Teen Room Redo Series is about as easy as you get! I had 2 pillows just sitting in my closet doing nothing so I decided to use their filling and make new pillows for Teen's room!

Supplies:
Fabric - 2 pieces per pillow 15" x 15" (or measure your old throws and add an inch for seams)
Batting or pillow filling or old throw pillow
Fabric for flower
Button
Sewing notions

1) I measured and cut the fabric.

2) I put the right sides together and sewed up 3 sides of the square (remembering to back stitch), then flip the square right side out.
  • This is where you would add the flower is you were going to ... you could add a rosette, or a yo-yo, this was just a ruffle.

    1) I took a strip of leftover fabric, fold in half (wrong sides together) and sew on the longest stitch you have.

    2) I gathered the ruffle and wound it around itself a few times until I had the size of flower I wanted.

    3) I sewed it to the pillow with a pretty ugly but sturdy stitching job.

    4) I sewed on the button to cover the ugly stitching mentioned above ;)

3) I took the old pillows, cut them open and stole their insides. I know I could have made slip covers but this seemed WAY easier at the time ;)

4) I stuffed the square, folded the open side inward and sewed it shut!

Easy right?! And how stinkin cute is that?! I made two since she has a futon and I was going to put it up like a couch to give the room that Uber Grown Up Feel :)

Here's another sneak peek ;) Oh I just love how the room turned out!

Teen Room Redo Part 1: Prettified Lamp Shade

This week I'm going to do a series of posts of craftsy stuff I did when I redid my oldest daughter's bedroom :) She was turning 13 and I decided early on that for her big gift I was going to redo her room in a style much more HER.

I decided to go with a Hot Pink/Black/White color scheme with a PARIS theme. She dreams of becoming a fashion designer and going to school in Paris :)

So this will be part one is a many parted series LOL

Part 1: Plain Thrift Store Lamp Shade to Pretty Rosette Lamp Shade!

I scored this sweet little lamp at the thrift store for $3.00!!!! It was a little dusty and a little plain, but I fixed all that :)

1) Remove lamp shade. lol

2. I cut a BUNCH of strips of fabric about 2.5" wide and 25" long - this measurement is just what I did. You can totally customize it depending on the size of rosettes you're looking for.

I cut a LOT of strips. All of the fabric I had left actually. I had intended to cover the shade with rosettes but ran out of fabric!

3. Roll Rosettes. Have your glue gun ready. Take a strip in hand and holding one side, start twisting the strip.

Then twist the strip around itself. For a better rosette tutorial, see this post.

4. I hot glued rosette directly to the lamp shade.

5. Repeat until you either run out of fabric or run out of patience ... or both like me ;)

I ended up being glad I only did the two rows. I think with the size of the rosettes it would have been too much to do the whole thing. It came out SOOOO pretty though! Not bad for a $3.00 lamp and about $1.00 worth of left over material :D

And here it is in a little preview of the final reveal! Isn't it PRETTY?!

Stay tuned for Part 2: Super Easy Pillow Covers!
